I finished building a pine bookcase that I plan on painting, but before sanding I used Elmers wood filler to fill various pocket holes and smooth out other seams & cracks. This is the paintable and supposedly stainable filler that is ready to apply out of the tub. It's a gritty filler that dries over a couple hours. I ran out halfway through, and the store was out of Elmers so I picked up some Minwax filler to finish the job thinking it was basically the same product. It isn't. This is a non-stainable filler with a smooth putty like consistency that's used to fill and repair rotted wood etc. And there is a tube of hardener included which you mix with the filler to cause it dry and harden quickly. Not reading the instructions carefully, this is where I messed up.

I've used wood repair fillers like this before and assumed the hardener was for applying to the rotted wood section to prep it for the filler, so I left it aside and didn't add it to the filler. The pocket holes I filled were about 1/2 deep and after a week the filler in them is still a bit soft to the touch.

Does anyone have any advise about how to remedy this? I'm considering mixing up some more filler (with the hardener this time) and applying that over the existing filler. Or possibly just brushing the hardener on to the places I used filler, but I'm worried that this might make the situation worse.

I am a cabinet maker and have used this product with much success. I saw so many negative reviews on Amazon that I felt I had to come to it's defense. Most all of the negative reviews were from people who were using this product incorrectly, as a pre-finish hole filler. This product does exactly what it's meant to do, fill nail holes after the final finish coat. It's faster and easier to do than filling the holes with a filler and then having to sand them before finishing.
